San Francisco was host to the NASFT Winter Fancy Foods Show this past weekend and, wow, what a spread! There was miles of cheese, chocolate, oils, dips, coffee, liqueurs, ice cream, sauces, dips, salts (lots of salts) and a ton of other fancy food products from all over the world.
My favorite Irish Cheddar, spiked with whiskey or ale is pictured below:
Among the thousands of products on hand, there were plenty for the bar.
We were recently asked to taste two amazing whiskies head to head, Johnnie Walker Blue Label vs. Chivas Regal 18.

Quite strong on the nose with a slight oakyness.
The color is a rich dark amber.
On the tongue Chivas 18 is smooth, fruity and warm with caramel accents. Every sip is smooth, velvety and wonderful.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label… Read moreNormally, when I pick a scotch, it’s single malt all the way. But Black Bull 12 year blended scotch was a Whiskyfest find that I wouldn’t mind finding wrapped up for me under the tree this year!
Bottled by Duncan Taylor, which has a great stable of whiskies, this scotch is very mellow. The light vanilla and sherry nose gives way to a slightly peaty honeyed scotch that goes down smooth.

Everything’s better with a little booze. So here are some Drink of the Week-approved ideas for Thanksgiving recipes that incorporate the bottle.
Whiskyfest San Francisco was Friday. There were a lot of men in kilts but they were outnumbered by bottles of whiskey. 200 different kinds available for tasting. We got a shot at tasting some that weren’t available to the general public. Throughout the next week, we’ll be sharing detailed reviews of our favorites. To whet your appetite, here are some of our picks from this year’s festivities:
Ardmore 30 — A truly layered and unique
Jack Daniel’s is now serving up some meat to go with that shot of whiskey.
Ready-made meals like baby back ribs, barbecue pulled pork and pork loin featuring Jack Daniel’s No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey are making their way to a grocery store near you.
The company has been making marinades, sauces and mustards for a while, so prepared food was the next move.
