    Wine for Dummies

    ByThe Barkeep September 9, 2006March 21, 2012

For those of us who know nothing about wines, here is your salvation. This robot developed by NEC and Mie University in Japan can help… for the price of a new car. OK, so it is a work in progress, the makers hope to get the cost below $1000, but this little guy is AWESOME. This robot scans wines, cheeses and other foods with hisleft arm, reading the reflected light to “taste” the wine. It … Read more

    ByThe Barkeep September 2, 2006March 21, 2012

This is a question I get asked quite a bit. What and how much do you buy when planning a cocktail party?

You don’t want to run out of anything, but you don’t want to be stuck with 6 bottles of cinnamon schnapps either. Hopefully our little guide will help you out when planning your next party. Plan for each guest to have 4 drinks over the course of an evening. The four drinks might … Read more

    Lewers Lounge

    ByThe Barkeep September 1, 2006March 21, 2012

The Halekulani is probably the nicest hotel in the whole state of Hawaii. It has a prime spot the beach, right in the center of Waikiki, yet has the feel of a much large secluded resort. The hotel has several terrific bars and restaurants that feature awesomely crafted island specialties. Pictured is my Mai Tai from the restaurant Orchid’s at sunset. It was delicious. We also experienced once of the best ever tuna poke’s at … Read more

    Cocktail Questions – 1950s Cocktails

    ByThe Barkeep August 30, 2006March 21, 2012

Q: I am throwing a 1950s themed party and would like to serve popular drinks from that era!

A: The 1950s are considered by many to be the Golden Age of the Cocktail. The martini was most popular. A favorite of Dean Martin and the rest of the Rat Pack, it became everyone’s favorite. My grandmother, who was never much of a drinker, still fondly remembers the 50s and those wonderful martinis.

    The Bacardi Mojito

    ByThe Barkeep August 23, 2006March 21, 2012

Taking it’s name for the African word “mojo” or “little spell,” the Mojito has its roots in from the time’s of Sir Francis Drake. One of his sailors invented a drink named the Draque, made with an early form of rum called Aquardiente, sugar, lime and mint. The drink was widely use for medical purposes in Havana. When Don Facundo Bacardi Masso began distilling his famous rum, he altered the Draque and it became the … Read more

    Breath Alcohol Calculator

    ByThe Barkeep August 21, 2006March 21, 2012

This online tool, from Intoximeters, calculates your blood alcohol level based on number and type of drink, your weight, gender and number of hours since imbibing. This isn’t a license to drink and drive—NEVER DO THAT—but rather a fun experiment while drinking with friends. The are no guarantees that this is accurate, so don’t email me with a sob story about how you got a DUI. Just don’t drink and drive. Play with this at … Read more
