Baileys Drinkable Desserts Challenge

Carmel Apple MartiniWe love contests, and this contest put on by the folks at Baileys should be a blast. The contest involves Drinkable Desserts, a new trend in desserts popping-up in restaurants and bars all over the country.

“Drinkable Desserts are the latest trend in cocktails and are a great alternative to traditional desserts,” said Chef de Cuisine of Gourmet’s Cooking Arts Center, Jennifer Day. “The Baileys Drinkable Desserts Challenge encourages people to start with Baileys Original Irish Cream or one of the two new Baileys flavors, and then use their imagination to find new ways to enhance the unique taste of Baileys Irish Cream while serving cocktails responsibly and with style.”

The fun and contemporary twist put on traditional desserts, making them drinkable, isn’t just for dining out. This cocktail and dessert trend, that is not only fun to drink but also delicious, can be made at home too!

Baileys is challenging America’s professional, amateur and aspiring mixologists to create their very own Drinkable Dessert using Baileys Original Irish Cream or its two new flavors, Baileys Mint Chocolate and Baileys Caramel.

The Grand Prize winning amateur and professional will have their recipes and images featured in a Baileys advertisement in the April 2007 issue of Gourmet Magazine. Additionally, the top amateur will receive a trip to New York City with a guest for a private cooking class in the Gourmet Cooking Arts Center with Day.

The site offers a list of suggested ingredients and garnishes which can be mixed with a base of Baileys Original Irish Cream, Baileys Mint Chocolate and Baileys Caramel.

To spark the imagination, here’s a great recipe for a Drinkable Dessert using one of the new Baileys Flavors:

Baileys Caramel Apple Pie-tini

To enter, and to view the complete rules participants can submit recipes to the challenge at www.drinkabledesserts.com through December 15, 2006.

It’s hard to believe that the Golden Gate Bridge turns 75 on May 27th. It’s been a cultural icon, an engineering marvel and the symbol of San Francisco since it’s opening in 1937. I can still remember the awe I experienced when I first time I saw it many years ago. I still experience a twinge of that awe every time I see its majestic orange-red spans suspended above the San Francisco Bay.

  • Highland Park Valhalla Collection – Thor – Review

The latest release from Highland Park is the first in a collection of four scotches with a release occurring every year, starting in 2012. It appears that each release will be named after a Norse god, and the first release is called Thor after the Norse god of thunder and war. Check out the Thor website. One may wonder why a Scotch house is paying homage to Norse gods. I know I asked myself that question. Well, it turns out that Orkney, the island where Highland Park is distilled, is actually as Norse as Scottish. The Vikings moved into Orkney in the 9th century and controlled it until the 15th century when the Scots gained control. In fact, the Vikings used Orkney as a base for raiding Britain, Scotland and other lands, including their brethren in Norway.

  • Kosher Wines for Passover

To celebrate Passover, we have come up with a list of some of our favorite Kosher wines to help you celebrate. You might be bowled over when you see favorite and Kosher wine in the same sentence, but it’s true. There is so much more to the world of Kosher wine than what you might think. For most people, Kosher wine is syrupy sweet wines that are synonymous with Manischewitz and Kedem, which interestingly enough, aren’t usually Kosher for passover as they are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. But, fear not. There are some amazing Kosher wines that are also Kosher for Passover coming out of Israel and France. In addition to the ones listed below, do some research and seek out other Kosher wines you like.
