A Wine for Halloween – Ash Hollow Headless Red Wine

We at DOTW love Halloween and our celebration lasts the entire month of October. We try hard to help our readers enjoy this creepy, crawly day (see our Halloween Drinks page). This year, we are excited to add Ash Hollow’s Headless Red to our Halloween fun.

We recently received a bottle of the Headless Red and didn’t know what to expect. But I have been impressed by the wines out of Washington state (for our Wine Wednesday readers, note that Washington State offers some great values). Believe it or not, most of the grapes grown in Washington state grow in an almost desert like conditions with grapes that make big, bold wines doing well in Washington state. Think Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.

The Headless Red came in a bottle with a very cool, spooky label of a headless rider on a rearing black gelding speeding through a Fall forest. Think a portrait of Sleepy Hollow affixed to a wine bottle. That’s Headless Red! For a Sleepy Hollow drink, click here. When it came time to crack the bottle, we were just as impressed with the liquid as the bottle itself, which was a concoction of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec.

Visually, the wine was clear with a medium ruby color with the rim starting to turn garnet. On the nose, the wine had a medium, developing intensity of plum, blackberry, black currant, leather, tobacco, vanilla and nutmeg. The wine had medium to medium plus acidity, medium body, medium tannin, medium plus alcohol, medium use of oak and a medium plus intensity of plum, blackberry, black currant, white pepper, sweet tobacco, menthol, vanilla and nutmeg. Medium plus finish. Both the hubby and I really liked the wine. It had a zingy complexity!

Give this wine a try at your next Halloween gathering. It retails at $18 per bottle with a discount for the purchase of multiple bottles.
