So what is the “Green Fairy” and how can you drink it? It’s absinthe, an anise-flavored spirit. It’s usually light green, but can also be colorless, white, yellow … even red. On March 5th 2007, absinthe was once again legalized in America after about 100 years.

Because of its very high alcohol content, the typical preparation involves adding water and sugar to it. Though it takes a little patience, it’s worth it.

  • Taming of the Shrew

A product of the new Las Vegas downtown cocktail scene, this drink is reminiscent of a lightly flavored martini, but served on the rocks. • Death in the Afternoon

With tomorrow, May 21st, being the date pegged for Armageddon things could get a little hairy. To ease the pain, we figured this 1935 classic was a perfect fit. Absinthe and Champagne… might as well go out in boozy style! Apparently, Ernest Hemingway created this lovely cocktail as his contribution to a celebrity recipe collection. • Fresa Catrina

Who better to create this Dia de los Muertos cocktail than the talented Thomas Waugh at New York’s famed Death & Company? The cocktail is named for Catrina, a skeletal figure who has become closely associated with Day of the Dead. In this recipe, the light and fruity taste of strawberry combined with the dark pop of anise and black pepper pays tribute to both the elegance of the Catrina and the darkness of death.… Read more

It’s Friday, how about some absinthe? Here’s a few fun facts from Lucid.

    1. It’s legal! And has been since 2007. Lucid (and Viridian Spirits) lobbied the US government to lift the 95-year ban and now absinthe is sold in all 50 states.

    2. Contrary to popular belief, absinthe doesn’t make you hallucinate. This is a popular absinthe myth and is 100% false. Of course, consuming any spirit (especially one with an extraordinarily high proof) … Read more
