    Happy National Punch Day

    ByJonas Halpren September 20, 2011March 7, 2012

Punch originated in India but quickly gained popularity amongst European sailors who took advantage of the abundance of Caribbean sugar cane. Sugar was perfect ingredient for their new drink of choice. Hindi for “five,” a true punch is composed of five main components: sugar, water, citrus, spice, and alcohol. When punch arrived in the new world, many drinkers relished the taste, texture and simplicity of the drink, and enjoyed sharing it in large quantities. “It’s … Read more

Wild Turkey American Honey Liqueur Review

    ByRachel Halpren September 20, 2011November 21, 2012

A relatively recent offering from Wild Turkey, it’s the sweeter, honied side of turkey. Actually, Wild Turkey American Honey is a blend of Wild Turkey and honey liqueur with the honey liqueur being added just before bottling. It tames the Wild Turkey but not completely. I wish that I had more to tell you about the history of the American Honey but I have searched high and low and there is nothing much out there … Read more

Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review

    ByRachel Halpren September 20, 2011March 7, 2012

Basil Hayden’s is a small-batch bourbon from Jim Beam Brands that was first released into the market in the 1980’s. Besides having a cool name (for some reason, I really like Basil Hayden’s), it is also in a beautiful, rustic bottle (seriously, I want to use the band around the bottle as a bracelet). I know that I have cautioned readers from purchasing wine based on the appearance of the bottle before and I will … Read more

    A Very Wine Departure

    ByRachel Halpren September 19, 2011March 7, 2012

It was the moment that I knew that I had finally turned into a full-on wine geek. It wasn’t the moment that I thought such an epiphany would strike. Was it in the middle of one of my many wine classes? No. Was it in the middle of the Bordeaux en primeur tasting? No. Was it when I purchased the Wine Grape Varietal Table (like the elemental chart but with wine grapes instead)? No, but … Read more

    Family Winemakers of California Tasting

    ByRachel Halpren September 16, 2011March 7, 2012

We recently attended the Family Winemakers of California Tasting at Fort Mason in San Francisco. It was an impressive collection of boutique wineries. In fact, I have to admit that we were a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of wineries in attendance (over 300) and the assortment of wines being poured. However, we persevered and began the trek down the long lines of wineries, stopping at one here and another there. I wish that … Read more

    Jalapeño Margarita

    ByDOTW Staff September 16, 2011August 3, 2015

Spice up your Margaritas with jalapeño-infused tequila!

Using a fresh jalapeño from my garden, I made a super-simple infusion that adds a little oomph to the basic Margarita. The spice level is moderate, so if you want a spicier result then add another pepper. Serve it with some chips and salsa, and you’re set.

    Ingredients

    2 oz jalapeño tequila*
    ¾ oz fresh orange juice
    ½ oz fresh lime juice
    1 oz triple sec

    Add … Read more

Russell’s Reserve 10-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon

    ByRachel Halpren September 15, 2011March 7, 2012

Named for Jimmy Russell, the master distiller of Wild Turkey, the Russell’s Reserve is a small-batch bourbon aged for 10 years.

Russell’s Reserve 10 Year is light brown in color with orange highlights with a nose of corn, vanilla, caramel, raisin and pecans. On the palate, the Russell’s Reserve is smooth with almost eucalyptus notes with further flavors of orange peel, vanilla, caramel, raisins and pecans.

Russell’s Reserve 10 Year is a nice sipping bourbon. … Read more

Russell’s Reserve 6-Year-Old Kentucky Rye Whiskey Review

    ByRachel Halpren September 15, 2011November 27, 2012

Rye was a favorite spirit in the United States prior to Prohibition. Since then, only a few producers have continued making rye but it is making a comeback. In 2007, Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie released Russell’s Reserve Rye.

Russell’s Reserve Rye is a light tawny, almost golden color with a nose of cherry, orange, dusty oak and spices. On the palate, the Russell’s Reserve is a lighter rye with flavor notes … Read more
